ESPAÑOL DOS - Sample Sentences for Final & Paragraph Information

These are not necessarily ones that will be on the final exam, but reflect clearly the type of multiple choice.  Check out the Spanish One information listed a few posts down, so you can be reminded about possessives, adjectives, agreement, etc.  If you have any questions, please let me know, and we can talk about it.

Monday, we'll be working in the lab, and I can answer questions there as well.  If you get a chance to go over the things you've been working on individually in Rosetta Stone, it will be beneficial.

Points are:  Sentences:  2 points apiece; Conjugations:  5 points each; Essay:  15 points.
************************
ESSAY
It's a minimum of 6 lines, written as a complete paragraph, in essay form.

It is to be written in narrative style.  You'll be telling a story about something that has already happened, so you will be using mostly the two past tenses, with present or the present progressive (estar + ing) or future (ir + a + verb) should it need it.

Here are the topics:

       1/ School memories/events
2/ A family trip/event/a fun time with the family you want to tell someone about.
3/ Something that happened to you of which you're very proud.
4/ Something you done - with your church, or to help someone else - that you'd like to share with the person reading your essay.

I'll have lots of vocabulary, parts of speech, verbs, nouns, etc., but I won't have all them. Think about what you'd like to write - BEFOREHAND - and look for the words you'd like to use, yes?

¡Qué tengan buena suerte!

ESPAÑOL DOS - Some Clue words for Imperfect and Preterit

fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron (preterite)
iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban (imperfect)

ESPAÑOL UNO - Written paragraph guidelines

As I've mentioned in class now, at some length (and it's been on the board all this past week), the paragraph for Spanish One will be five lines minimum, and on a topic.  It's to be written just as if you were writing one in English - not 5 two or three word sentences, listed one after the other, but rather a well-thought through paragraph.

There will be listed, on the final paper, samples of verbs, adjectives, colors, numbers, pronouns - all manner of vocabulary that you have had.  I'm not going to list every single one you've had, so as I've said earlier, studying both your notes and checking in to Rosetta Stone - even at home - is important.

The style for the paragraph essay is DESCRIPTIVE.  The reason it is this style is because you only have present tense in Spanish One.  You're also able to do future tense by using IR A + VERB; and you have the present progressive tense (ESTAR + ING), but that's it.  A descriptive essay/paragraph - even the most well-written, use the following:

*present tense
*descriptive words (colors, adjectives - words that bring your sentences to life as you paint a verbal picture)
*you want the person who is reading your paragraph/essay to really be able to 'see' what you're talking about.  It doesn't take fancy or difficult words.  You can do it with simple words you already have - and some real thought.

The topics for the final exam paragraph are:

1 - Sports
2 - Stuff I love to do (hobbies, music, friends, etc.)
3 - My family and what I love about them.

Most of you will do - and have done - fantastic work on writing paragraphs.  We've been doing them now a little while.  If you have questions, write them down when you think about them, and talk with me after class or after school.

Good luck!

ESPAÑOL UNO - Sample Sentences for Multiple Choice

These are only examples and may or may not show up on the final exam.  In both the classroom setting, as well as on Rosetta Stone (and I strongly urge all of you to check in and go over the sentences in the program.  We'll also be doing that on Monday and possibly Tuesday, as we review for the final.)  Once again, there is nothing new, no surprises - just everything we've studied, gone over, and you've then looked at in Rosetta Stone.

Please, please pay attention to the three sentences that comprise each question.  Look at plural matching plural (if a noun is plural, and you have an adjective, it also must be plural, and match in gender - male or female - if it applies.)

If you have any questions, please write them down when you think about them, then ask me.

Examples: (this color is:  right)

1.  A.  Vamos a la casa las ocho.
      B.  Vamos a casa a las ocho.
      C.  Vamos a casa son las ocho.

2.   A.  Mis hermanos estan en casa.
       B.  Mi hermanos están en casa.
       C.  Mis hermanos están en casa.

3.   A.  ¿De dónde estás?
       B.  ¿De dónde eres?
       C.  ¿De donde eres?

4.   A.  Jugamos al fútbol.
       B.  Tocamos al fútbol.
       C.  Juegamos al fútbol.

5.   A.  Nos gustan comer patatas fritas.
       B.  Nos gusta comer patatas fritas.
       C.  Nos gustan comen patatas fritas.

These are five examples of what the questions will look like on the final.  Remember things like the following:

* When you're using the verb GUSTARSE, you only use two forms:  gusta & gustan.  Which one you use depends on what follows it - for the singular (gusta), the infinitive of the verb or a singular noun; use the plural (gustan) with a plural noun.  That's all.  The indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les) indicates who likes.

* Remember that JUGAR means to play, as in a game or a sport; TOCAR means to play, as in an instrument.

* Where you are from (your origin, which cannot change) takes SER (see #3).  Where you are in the moment, or where something is located, takes ESTAR.

* In #2, it's ESTAR because your location is at home.  Remember that EN CASA means AT HOME, and A CASA means TO HOME.  Also, when using possessives (my, your, his, etc.) it must agree in number.  So,

                 My house - Mi casa
                 My houses - mis casas

                 His brother - su hermano
                 His brothers - sus hermanos

* #1 is about going home - A CASA; also,

                  at 8 o'clock is A LAS OCHO
                  It's 8 o'clock is SON LAS OCHO

Once again, any questions come to mind, write them down and we'll get them answered.

ESPAÑOL UNO - Examples for the Final Exam

Although you have, in your notebooks, and here in the blog, I'll write them again, so you have them.  Please make sure that you know which pronoun goes with which conjugation.  Check your notes.  Everything on the final is what we have studied all year.  There are no surprises and nothing new.

1.  -ar Verbs (ex:  hablar)

Yo hablo
Tú hablas
Él, ella, usted (ud.) habla

Nosostros hablamos
Vosotros habláis
Ellos, ellas, ustedes (uds.) hablan

2.  - er Verbs (ex:  comer)

Yo como
Tú comes
Él, ella, usted (ud.) come

Nosotros comemos
Vosotros coméis
Ellos, ellas, ustedes (uds.) comen

3.  - ir Verbs (ex:  vivir)

Yo vivo
Tú vives
Él, ella, usted (ud.) vive

Nosotros vivimos
Vosotros vivís
Ellos, ellas, ustedes (uds.) viven

These are the endings for all regular verbs in the Spanish language, even the stem changing verbs (thus far you have only had TENER, VENIR, and PODER) - They are listed below.

4.  Tener (1st person singular is irregular; stem change is from - ten to - tien.  Remember that nosotros and vosotros do not change.)

Yo tengo
Tú tienes
Él, ella, usted (ud.) tiene

Nosotros tenemos
Vosotros tenéis
Ellos, ellas, ustedes (uds.) tienen

Note:  VENIR is conjugated exactly the same way as TENER.  They are both -er verbs, both stem changing to 'ie'.

5.  Poder (this verb changes from pod- to pued- in all but nosotros and vosotros, and the first person singular follows the rule (as in:  ¿Puedo ir al baño?)

Yo puedo
Tú puedes
Él, ella, usted (ud.) puede

Nosotros podemos
Vosotros podéis
Ellos, ellas, ustedes (uds.) pueden

6.  Ser - To Be (one of the two most important verbs in the language, we have explored SER both in class and you have seen it used extensively in Rosetta Stone.  It is the verb of time, personality, profession, where you're from, and more.  Your notes on this are from the very first days of your school year.  It's an irregular verb, so it's one that - along with ESTAR, the other verb To Be - just had to be memorized.)

Yo soy
Tú eres
Él, ella, usted (ud.) es

Nosotros somos
Vosotros sois
Ellos, ellas, ustedes (uds.) son

7.  Estar - To be (see above for general information on the two verbs of To Be.  ESTAR is the verb of condition, location ("how you feel and where you are, always use the verb Estar".  Do NOT forget your accents on this verb.  As you've learned, if you don't put the accent over the 'A' then it becomes another word entirely:  'this')

Yo estoy
Tú estás
Él, ella, usted (ud.) está

Nosotros estamos
Vosotros estáis
Ellos, ellas, ustedes (uds.) están

If you have any questions on verbs or their forms, please let me know before the final.  Next segment will be on the sample sentences in the multiple choice section.
